    Remembering Margo LaGattuta

My eyes like old glass windows, dusted with lost days, are ready to hold the new light.” — Margo LaGattuta, from “Pretending to Be a Barn” I found the e-mail from another writer-friend early this morning. It wasn’t unexpected, though I’d learned only two days ago that Margo LaGattuta was suddenly terminally ill. “Margo died peacefully tonight, surrounded by her sons and sisters and friends….It was quite beautiful and I just know she’s writing a poem about it….” It’s never easy to lose a mentor or a friend, and the best we can hope for is one last chance to say thank you. What the sidewalk says

Draw a crazy picture, Write a nutty poem, Sing a mumble-gumble song, Whistle through your comb. Do a loony-goony dance ‘Cross the kitchen floor, Put something silly in the world That ain’t been there before.” — Shel Silverstein Walking to the local Trader Joe’s for groceries, Doug and I discovered the sidewalk commentary, above, printed in newly poured concrete. Decking the halls

“A house is a home when it shelters the body and comforts the soul.” — Phillip Moffitt It’s always an honor to have your home featured in the “Homestyle” section of The Detroit News. Here’s a link to the article that runs this weekend, featuring our 1927 Tudor-revival home decorated for Christmas. Design writer Jeanine Matlow did a wonderful job telling our story. To see additional photos that didn’t appear in the article click here. From our house to yours, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! — CL –Photo courtesy of The Detroit News —

    Wild things

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”  ~Albert Einstein I’m always tickled when my essays are chosen for new story collections. Released this summer, Jennifer Bove’s Wild with Child: Adventures of Families in the Great Outdoors, includes a piece I wrote about surviving Cub Scout camp when my son was a kid. Don’t let another summer weekend go by without spending quality time outdoors. Unplug your gadgets for a few days and reconnect with Mother Nature. Pitch a tent, swim in a river, feel the grass on your bare feet, cook dinner on an open fire, and make your own family memories under the stars.  –CL
