Everything you love

“I am all the things I have ever loved.” ~Toni Morrison, American author

“List Yourself” is one of my favorite writing practices, and it’s even easier than journaling. Pick up a brand-new journal and fill its pages with lists of all kinds — your favorite books and films, your biggest accomplishments, pet peeves, favorite recipes, people who’ve inspired you, places you’d like to visit, and so on. The practice of list-making might seem simplistic, but it can lead to self-awareness and discovery.

When you make lists of all the things you love, for instance, you’ll see a unique self-portrait taking shape on the page, just as today’s quote suggests. Furthermore, if you’re feeling blue, listing your favorite things works as a spirit lifter, reminding you to appreciate the goodness in your life. ~CL

*** I’ll be posting less frequently on “Life Lines” while I work on other writing projects, including my new weekly columns on Substack. My Substack columns offer a lifestyle/opinion perspective on current politics. In other words, I discuss how everything going on today impacts the daily lives of ordinary people like me. The intro column is titled, “When the political gets personal.”

Throughout my career, I've worked as a book production editor, travel magazine editor, features writer, and weekly newspaper columnist. My award-winning lifestyles features and essays have appeared in many national magazines and anthologies, including Newsweek, Reader's Digest, The Christian Science Monitor, Writer's Digest, Victoria, Better Homes & Gardens, Bella Grace, and more. My weekly Sunday "Life Lines" column ran for 14 years in The Daily Tribune (Royal Oak, MI) and won a First Place (Local Columns) award from the Michigan Press Association. My essay collection, Writing Home, includes 93 previously published columns and essays focusing on parenthood and family life.
