    Meeting grace

“I do not understand the mystery of grace — only that it meets us where we are and does not leave us where it found us.” ~Anne Lamott After I shared a post about preparing for a biopsy on Friday, several of you emailed to offer words of support and encouragement. One of those messages arrived when I was in the waiting room prior to the procedure, lifting my spirits and boosting my courage. In Friday’s post, I shared a quote I’d found on a teabag, which read, “The unknown is where all outcomes are possible; enter it with grace.” On the morning of the biopsy, I found myself repeating…

    Embracing the unknown

“The unknown is where all outcomes are possible; enter it with grace.” ~Message on a Yogi teabag Later this morning, I’ll undergo a biopsy that was scheduled a few weeks ago and has been hanging over my head like an invisible question mark. At this point, I don’t know when the results will come back. Waiting is the hardest part. Most of us struggle with the unknown. “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I’ll meet you there.” ~Rumi Last month, I retrieved a nonpartisan lawn sign from my garage and placed it near the side entrance of our home. The sign, shown above, simply encourages us to “BE KIND” — a gentle piece of advice we could all use during a terribly divisive election season. But until last week, I swore I wasn’t going to display a sign for a presidential candidate on my lawn this year. I had dozens of reasonable excuses for that decision, starting with the fact that I didn’t want to offend my neighbors with opposing viewpoints. I…

    Have a little hope

“Hope is a renewable option: If you run out of it at the end of the day, you get to start over in the morning.” ~Barbara Kingsolver Have you ever had a long conversation with a chronic complainer or a critic who finds fault with everything? If so, you know how easy it is to return home feeling deflated, exhausted, drained, or pessimistic. Negativity is as contagious as the norovirus — so it’s wise to avoid exposure if you can. Today’s quote reminds us that we can choose to steer toward a better outlook. Have a little hope — and a wonderful weekend! ~CL

    Are you really listening?

“It is the province of knowledge to speak, and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Some folks are always thinking about what they want to say next — and not really listening to others. I notice this often on talks shows and discussion panels, and I’ve experienced it myself in daily conversations. Listening is an unsung, unspoken skill — and we can learn from those who do it well. Attentive listeners silence their own egos. They don’t try to hijack or dominate a conversation, and they don’t try to “top” anything you’ve just said. They ask thoughtful follow-up questions after you’ve had your say,…
