Glittering magical moments
“Life is made up of moments, small pieces of glittering mica in a long stretch of gray cement. It would be wonderful if they came to us unsummoned, but particularly in lives as busy as the ones most of us lead now, that won’t happen. We have to teach ourselves how to make room for them, to love them, and to live, really live.” ~Anna Quindlen, A Short Guide to a Happy Life
Today is my birthday, so I’ve been reflecting on events that unfolded since last August. What did I learn from them? How did they change me?
There have been a few challenges: Coco was hit by a car, Doug’s mother died, and I’ve experienced some medical drama. Not to mention the political turmoil that’s covered daily on every news station. But there have been some highlights too — some unexpected moments of happiness and pleasure. Today’s quote reminds me that I need to “make room” for more of those moments, and to appreciate the life I have.
When we list the highlights of summer, most of us tend to focus on the major milestones of the season — weddings, graduation parties, family reunions, and vacations. Likewise, when we chronicle our whole lives in retrospect, we list the big events and achievements first. But all said and done, I believe that the happiest lives are built on the “small pieces of glittering mica” that Anna Quindlen mentions in today’s quote.
What moments in your life shine brightest? Are you making room for more of them? ~CL
