I’ll just say that I believe people who have children are less self-centered, on average, than those who don’t. And that’s a very good thing, to say the least.

I write at night, when I have enough energy, often after the child and hubby goes to bed. Or occasionally in the am since I am always the first one up! The blessings of middle aged decreased need for sleep! Great article Cindy!

When my sons were small, I wrote poetry. Writing short things allowed me to accomplish something whole in my fragmented schedule. It’s a challenge, that’s for sure.

    Cindy Harrison,
It’s funny you mention “short” writing… that’s exactly how and why I started focusing on columns and short essays. I didn’t have time for much more when I was a mom. I also wrote a lot of haiku back then :-) But over time I fell in love with short pieces, and haven’t been able to break the spell…

I am amazed at the demands placed on young mothers today, in addition to all the new-fangled technology that further complicates their lives. I follow a few moms online who still have children at home and am continually impressed with all they do while they give their kids the attention they need, too.
