Change is messy

“There’s only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.” — Aldous Huxley
Every time our walls give way to a sledgehammer, I’m reminded that change of any kind is never easy. Whether you’re updating a vintage kitchen or trying to lose a few pounds before hitting the beach, “self-improvement” takes time and patience. That’s my topic in this week’s Midpoint column in The Oakland Press. To read the column, click here. Meanwhile, I’d love to know: What changes are you working on this spring? — CL

We did a 2 bathroom plus game room remodel last spring and summer (well, it finally got finished at Christmas;-) so I know what you mean about the chaos. And I like thinking about my stalled exercise routine this way. I just need to get back on schedule. Maybe by Christmas.

Since returning from vibrant Florida, I’ve realized how drab my house is. So we are launching in to spruce it up with color. A bathroom, kitchen, and hallway for starters. New colorful accessories in the living room. Synchronistically, I have a blog guest today speaking on color and how it affects us –even in light of what you wrote about, Cindy –improving ourselves. Lovely article as always! Hugs!

Oh boy, we’re looking at needing a new roof and siding at some point this year. I think sometimes it’s the prep that intimidates, the choosing and selecting and learning along the way. It’s true, the end result will be so worth it, but getting there? One day at a time, I guess!

The outdoors at my house, which can hardly be called a yard, literally needs work from the ground up. I raked for a couple hours today and barely scratched the surface. Tree limbs need to be trimmed, brush needs to be hauled, and rocks need to be removed ~ probably a summer’s worth of work just to get things cleaned up. There is a cheerful but lonely row of daffodils near our stone wall. I am going to plant a few more flowers as an incentive to focus on what’s possible down the road.

Lots of changes, inside and out; big and little changes. After such a long winter, the house and my life need some lightening up and refreshing.
Cleaning up the yard and installing a new garden area and birdfeeders; cleaning and reorganizing inside the house, too. It’s a process, as you said in your article, not something you can do in one day. So I’ve been reminding myself not to force it but take it one step at a time and enjoy it.
My vision has changed recently, so I’ll be getting new eyeglasses (including reading glasses and computer glasses. Even bought new rugs for the kitchen and bathroom today.
And all of this physical activity is getting me into shape, as well.
