A fragile season

“And homeless near a thousand homes I stood,
And near a thousand tables pined and wanted food.” –William Wordsworth
With a nod to the Lenten season and Michigan’s struggling economy, Read the Spirit is running a series this week on “life’s necessities” and how to remain balanced in troubled times. This series includes an essay I wrote three years ago when I was adjusting to my new status as an empty nester. The piece originally appeared in the Literary Mama anthology, and was awarded 2nd prize in Detroit Working Writers’ Annual Spring Competition last May. Please click here to read the piece. –CL

Beautiful, simply beautiful. So glad you re-published/shared that experience. Giving can be the antidote for many ailments.

It’s amazing how stepping out of our comfort zone like this really has a way of changing (clarifying?) our perspective. Giving like this can humble our own worries.

That was a wonderful article. Among other things, it makes me think about what giving and receiving is.
Also thanks for sharing the link to ReadtheSpirit. I was not aware of that website, and it looks like a great resource.

This is such a timely piece for me. I have been studying compassion trying to understand what makes some people compassionate and others not. Thank you for sharing your personal example of compassion in action.
