Thrift shop angel

“In almost every situation, there are ways that we can fly higher, at fuller wingspan.” — Marianne Williamson
For some, “thrifting” is a hobby. For others, it’s the only way to afford clothes or household goods. If you shop at flea markets and thrift shops for designer discards and vintage clothing, you might appreciate this essay from my book, which is featured this week as part of a special holiday series on ReadThe Spirit. –CL

Cindy,
Your essay provided a heart-warming glow to my morning reading. An absolutely lovely piece, and such a wise reminder to us to help one another out in this holiday season. Many are struggling, many are heavily burdened. Whatever we can do to lighten someone’s load is certainly an angelic act. May we fly high!
I also loved your piece on simplifying the holidays in Michigan Women’s Forum. I am a recovering holiday fanatic, and as each year goes by, I am kinder to myself in terms of holiday expectations. It feels really good to be more gentle with myself in this way. In fact, this year, my holiday decorating only took about one half hour. In previous years, it took days! A recent visitor to my home commented on the simplicity she witnessed in my decorating scheme and it inspired her to do the same. My heart did a little jig. Our tree is still not up, but, oh, well. It will come in time. In this moment, the most important thing for me to do is tidy up my desk and get ready to take my 7-year-old granddaughter to her first ballet. A new holiday tradition in our house. I can’t wait!
Holiday love and blessings to you,
Jan

So good to hear from you here, Jan! Thanks for your kind words for the “Angel” essay. I visited your blog just now and so enjoyed your beautiful post on “Stillness” and being snowed in up north. It’s a timely call to slow down and savor winter beauty. (I tend to focus on the negative, like bad winter driving, so I appreciate your reminder!)
I’m still enjoying and recommending Your Truest Self — and suggesting it as a perfect Christmas gift for women friends.
Everyone — don’t miss Jan Lundy’s column, Pockets of Peace, on Michigan Women’s Forum every month.
