A dark and stormy night …

Halloween and mixed media collage are two of my favorite things — and it’s not often I get to combine the two. While I rarely enter fine art shows, the call for entries for Anton Art Center’s Annual Blood Bath City Halloween exhibition had my name all over it. Mustering my courage, I entered an altered book last year and the piece was accepted.

My husband, an artist who’s never too shy to exhibit his work, encouraged me to enter again this year.  The photo at left shows my shrine to the writing life, which was accepted for this year’s Blood Bath City show. Titled “It was a dark and stormy night”, the piece is crafted from found objects, including a broken fountain pen, a vintage typewriter ribbon tin, antique spectacles, an old Game of Authors card set, and some creepy vines I collected on a walk in the woods.

If you love spine-tingling artwork, you can view the whole display at the Anton Art Center from Friday, October 10th through November 2nd. There’s also an opening reception and costume party with live music on October 24th from 9pm – 2am. I’ll be there, but I promise you won’t recognize me in my costume!  — CL

That’s looks cool. My late husband and I always helped build and run the local haunted house. I loved constructing gruesome scenes and then dressing up to scare people. I kinda miss that.

That is really terrific. I love it. You’ve got quite an eye. I wish I was closer so that I could attend and view the entire collection. What a great idea.

This is something I could appreciate about Halloween, my least favorite holiday. I didn’t enjoy dressing up as a kid. My favorite part with my own kids was helping them find parts of a costume once they decided what they wanted to be. Now? I close up the house and take myself out to dinner and a movie on Halloween night. But I could totally enjoy an art exhibit.

I had never heard about altered books until we talked about them, Cindy. Very cool. And I too am wondering about your costume…

    Cindy,

This is beautiful! Teach a class in altered books!
    Please!

When I studied in France, our teacher made a reference to the “wonderful American writer Ed Garpo.” Despite the delicious roll of the “r”, we had no idea who Ed Garpo was. A fourth, and unknown, Stooge?

Turns out it was Edgar Poe. We figured the French weren’t into middle names any more than they were into tossing their Gauloises for the sake of pink lungs.

Wonder work of art, Cindy. By the way, what’s your middle name?

very cool. and I second Debra. I’d take that class.
